That night guest was Rebecca MacKinnon talking about creative commons. Something that I know very little about.

The place was packed again… A lot more ang moh than locals.

I met some news friends.

Ben Croxogod of Hkday.net

P1010020
Kelly Dakin from Moni-media.net.

Thks Ed from Dookaz for taking the pix.

Nothing much I can say about this creative commons. Will there be a wide adoption on the platform, probably not in the near future. It will take a lot education to get the message in HK. This is my thought.

On a weekend at Tianhe, Guangzhou »

Went up to Tianhe district, Guangzhou for the weekends. This time I took a non-stop train from Hung Hom station to East Guangzhou Station. The price is $190Hkd one way. You can check out the fare and time schedule here.

P1000975

Condoms…Wow…NO need to pick it up at 7-11. I like this hotel. This is what I called…taking care of clients needs. Heehheee….

Some slides on the hotel - Yu Tong Hotel. Well, the price $300.00 Rmb. This kind of price u will never be able to get it for a 3 Star Hotel in KL. The room is spacious, free internet and plus a breakfast…What more do u want???

P1000994
Traffic Jam - Have not seen it for a long time.

P1000990
Coming in all the way to Guangzhou to have Starbucks…I know…I have a problem.

P1010012
Went to the Book City. This place is packed and you have to wait in a long line to pay. I don’t see this in HK. Probably during the yearly Book Fair. This Book City is open all year long.

On Thestandard.com.hk flip newspaper »

My hat-off goes to thestandard.com.hk for bringing the entire newspaper in flip page mode. I have always said during my kopitiam talk with my friends. Since thestandard.com.hk is offering free newspaper on print, why not offer the entire contents on the net. Now, they have done it…Congratulation.

thestandard

I have said to myself (hhehehe)..I really want to head the online division of The Standard because I really think I can give scmp.com a run for the money. There are some much stuff I can do on thestandard.com.hk. Unfortunately, I am at my computer bullshitting about what I can do…

At this point, I want to give a suggestion to thestandard.com.hk (like if they listened to me..hehee). They should make their width dynamic rather than a fixed width.

On Webwednesday - 13th Aug »

I can’t believe the crowd attending this month Wedwednesday. It was really packed. Maybe because of the two power guests or Napoleon is doing something different.

P1000924
The one in the middle is Michael Logan (Editor, Multimedia - SCMP.com) and the one on the right is Sam Hui (Business Director - atnext.com)

P1000929
Took a pix with Michael Logan of SCMP.com

Michael talked about providing podcast at scmp.com and some other technology they are looking into.

Well, most of the companies that are under the Tan Sri’s usually are very conservative. They don’t try new things. Podcast is cheap to produce. So, that is why it’s easily available at SCMP.com. Moreover, SCMP.com is the dominate newspaper in town. Why do something new that cost money and has practically no ROI.

Do I download podcast?

NO…Why? Sorry Michael..no offence. I am very selective…what can I say. I will download podcast when these two criteria satisfy me.

First, I will only accept two distinct native english accent such American and British. All other is no good and no pseudo american accent (like me…heheee).

Second, the tone of the voice. If I don’t hear something closer to a TV or Radio broadcast tone of voice, it’s no good.

Imagine me, a malaysian with heavy malaysian accent doing podcast and the listeners are American or British. They won’t accept my accents, my enunciation and my tone of voice.

P1000928
Me and Sam Hui

Atnext.com seems pretty innovative with their portal. They let real time comments on certain feature news. This is a good way to gauge the public opinion. Another thing was webcast and Sam spoke about a webcast they did with Kelly Chen (the singer), some of fan was so ecstatic because they can chat with their idol.

Question is why webcast and not Web-TV? the rumour on the street was the cost was too high, so the boss cut short on the Web-TV goal. I would not blame them because you really could not see where to make money while maintaining such a big team.

I heard OnTv has about 200 personnel on ONTV team. That is a lot of manpower.

To me, the destination of newsprint is web-tv. Web-tv will will complement and provide new channel of revenue. The question is when they can achieve respectable revenue. Only time will tell…

On attending Charles Mok first election gathering »

I was invited by Charles Mok to hang at his first election gathering. Never been to a HK style election get-together. NO FREE Food & Drinks becuase that will violate the election rules. He is vying for the Functional Constituencies - Information Technology Seat. You can check out the 2008 Legislative Council Election website and you can click on the banner I put up on the right side of my blog to check out his schedule.

P1000845
The Banner….I did not sign. I could not find the special pen….

P1000848
Napoleon from Palava Digital was there. Napoleon put me to shame because he read and write simplify and traditional chinese. I can’t…I know…what can I say…Never thought the chinese language is so important when I was in Los Angles or KL.

P1000849
Me and Charles Mok.

P1000851
Busy exchanging business card.

P1000868
Nelson of Openradiohk.com was there, too.

P1000872
The girl in the middle…Daisy Maris Fung. Finally got a chance to meet her in person. A very well known blogger in HK. I categorize Daisy and Sidekick as power blogger. Daisy has other blogs in chinese but I am an illiterate chinese. So…only read her english blog.

Anyway, it was quite interesting to hang at Charles Mok election get-together. So…thks Charles and hope you will pick up the seat. I will try to go to your up coming gathering…depending on my schedule. But then again…I am a bum. I don’t have any schedule…hhehee…

On a weekend at Interlaken Octeast Resort »

We had the opportunity to spend the weekend at the Interlaken OCTEast Resort up in Shenzhen. The journey is about 45 minutes from Lo Wu, Shenzhen to Da Mei Sha and 1/2 an hours up to the top of the mountain. Going up the mountain top is like going to Genting Highlands.

oct1

This resort has the feels of Disneyland, Genting Highlands, Mines and Sunway Lagoon. This place is quite spectacular. You check their website. Have tonnes of stuff. We only managed to visit the theme park.

oct2
I love this view…

P1000675
The parade…similar to Disneyland…but with chinese flavor…

P1000733
We took a train that give us a glimpse of the entire resort. Very long…some 5km…on a hot summer day…

Another attraction still in construction…

P1000705

Me with the background of the hotel.

Check out the room via the slide. Very spacious and comes with LCD Tv with cable (It has Hbo, Cinemax, Cnn, BBC and some others). Brand Name Toiletries. King Size Bed. This is just the standard room.

P1000814
A night view toward the hotel

I never thought anyone in China would spend some much money to built this kind of resort. For me, I enjoyed the weekend. After the train ride, we just went back to the hotel and sit on the sofa, enjoy my coffee and the Tv. They hv free internet access in the room but I did not bring my notebook. I am not an internet addict…heheehee.

On my first year in Hong Kong »

My first anniversary in Hong Kong. Any celebration? Nope….just another day passed-by.

How is it..so far?
Well…it really has been miraculous and I called this my/our (me & my wife) excellent adventure. Hong Kong is our third migration and I think Hong Kong is the last stop for us. The last two was Los Angeles and Malaysia.

Met many new friends. You can see the picture on my blog. I hang with them all the time.

Why I say miraculous?
Well…I have always blamed the Big Kahuna for not fullfilling what he said. He always said ‘ Asked and Ye shall be Given’, ‘ Knock and the Door will Open’ and ‘Seek and Ye shall find’. I never did find any in Malaysia.

But in Hong Kong…thing start to change…I asked and it was given. Not what I fully wanted but I was given a little. I can see and feels everything starts to slowly opening up. That is why..I am just enjoying the moment in HK and I have to admit the Big Kahuna is looking over my shoulders. My name is still on his database.

P1000828
Taken at Interlaken OCTEast Hotel, Shenzhen

Can I take the pace in Hong Kong?

Well…They are fast. There are two things I observed. Preplan and Ad-hoc activities. They are very fast in doing Ad-Hoc stuff. Because of their speed, most of the time on the Preplan stuff, they tend to do it last minute. I can’t do Ad-Hoc stuff fast but I can achieve Preplan stuff on time or sometime ahead of schedule. So far…I can compete…

Moving forward

Well, my first priority is my market speculation/trading. I have been off-track on my trading. I need to get back into the game. My trading partners are coming back online, too. So..thing are looking good…

I have been tinkering on some other net stuff and the rest is just enjoying the moment…

On how to get to Sincere Podium, the gadget paradise in HK »

Hongkong Phooey did an awesome article on how to get to Sincere Podium (先達廣場) at his Cnet column. A favorite place of mine, too.

When it comes to shopping, everyone knows that Hong Kong is one of the best places to shop, especially for electronic goods. For us gadgeteers, it’s also a mobile phone hub as one can get hold of those new models, fine accessories, and sometimes bargain deals. Been asked a lot on my blog and during conversations with tourists on how to get to one place in particular, the Sincere Podium, better known as Sintat Centre (先達廣場), the ultimate shopping paradise for mobile phones and accessories.?

Here, you can find unlocked iPhone 3Gs, the iPhone look-alike Meizu and tons of other goodies. More

Click on the more to check out his article and he included a video on how to get there.

I usually hang out there to check out PDAs and Camera. This place has great prices on parallel imports and used gadgets.
