On How To Setup PCCW 3G Web & Talk

Recently, I signed up the PCCW 3G Web & Talk. They must have one of the worst support that I have ever had.

Their website does not tell you how to setup the GPRS setting, voicemail, email, and wifi. After a week of pestering PCCW customer service. Finally, they send me an email on how to do the setup.

So, I am posting it here in case someone has the same problem. I don’t how they sell their stuff without after sales support.

GPRS Setting

CLICK “START”  “SETTINGS”  “CONNECTIONS”  “CONNECTIONS”
 “ADVANCED” “SELECT NETWORKS”  “NEW”
Insert the below information:
Name: PCCW 3G

CHOOSE MODEM>NEW
1.) ENTER A NAME FOR THESE SETTINGS:
Name: PCCW 3G GPRS
2.) SELECT A MODEM:
Cellular Line (GPRS,3G)
3.) CLICK ” NEXT”
ACCESS POINT NAME: pccw
4.) CLICK ” NEXT”
USERNAME / PASSWORD / GATEWAY: (leave it blank)
5.) CLICK” FINISH”
6.) CLICK ” PROXY SETTING”
CHOOSE “THIS NETWORK CONNECTS TO THE INTERNET”&”THIS NETWORK USES A PROXY SERVER TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET”
7.) PROXY SERVER INSERT: 10.140.14.10
8.) CLICK ”ADVANCED”
HTTP>SERVER:10.140.14.10 PORT:8080
WAP>SERVER:10.140.14.10 PORT:9201
9.) ”FINISH”

MMS Setting

CLICK “START”  MESSAGE CENTERTOOLSMMS SETTINGMMS SERVER“NEW”
INSERT THE BELOW INFORMATIONS:
PROXY SERVER: PCCW MMS
GATEWAY:10.140.14.10
PORT: 9201
SERVER IP: http://3gmms.pccwmobile.com:8080/was
LIMIT: 250KB
DATA CONNECT: CHOOSE ”PCCW 3G”
WAP GATEWAY: CHOOSE ”WAP 1.2”

WIFI

I use PPC with WM5 and WM6. When you pick up the Wifi signal. Open your browser, sign using the monthly payment plan. There is drop-down box with the default ‘netvigator.com’. Click on the drop-down box and find the ‘pccw mobile’.

Your login id is your phone number and the password is your six digit HKID number.

or you can go to their website and download the user-guide. It’s pretty straight forward.

Voicemail

Call – 6388-8892 and just follow instruction.

Email

I received my first bill and I still don’t know the smtp for the outgoing email. I can received but I can’t send out.

Update
Email via GPRS – If you want to send email while connect with the GPRS, the smtp server should as the same as your domain name. Ex. smtp: mail.msn.com & incoming server: mail.msn.com. You need to tick the authentication required. That it and you can send it out.

Email via Wifi -This is troublesome. I would not encourage sending email while you are in Starbucks, Pacific Coffee or MTR because you need to be a Netvigator account holder. Meaning you need to have internet subscription at home. The smtp server – smtp.netvigator.com and incoming – mail.msn.com. Then you need to take TICK the authentication and you need to key in the netvigator account holder name and password.

So..don’t bother. Just enable your GPRS to send and receive email.

For me, the WiFi everywhere drawn me to this plan. PCCW has one of largest hotspots in Hong Kong. When you in need of WiFi, you can pick-up from MTR, Starbucks, Pacific Coffee, 7-Eleven, Circle K and others. It’s the support that I am quite tick-off.

Update: Sept 18,09

I no longer subscribed to the 3g Web & Talk. I move my number to Peoples(China Mobile). Unlimited GPRS for only $110. HKD. No contract needed to be sign.

I realized in Hong Kong, wifi in not important or relevant. When you are on the move. Always having a internet connection is essential. You can check your RSS, Twit, Facebook, Google maps(Gps), MSN and having email push to u in every 15 minutes without worrying if I max out on my 60MB or 100Mb. It’s not as fast as 3G but it’s good enough for what I want to do.

On The Bank Run At BEA

I was heading home and came to see the crowd at BEA. Some dude or syndicate spread some rumors on BEA financial stability and everybody runs to the bank to withdraw their money.

P1010378

Check out the crowd…

Check out the slides.

This is not a weak bank. I look at their P&L. The bank is sound. Profit continue to growth year on year. Why someone want to spread rumor on this bank???

Anyway, I don’t think any bank will go down in Hong Kong because Bush has make a precedent on saving everything on the U.S. soil. When Don Corleone is doing this, everyone can do it…so..no worries.

On The China Government Should Buy AIG, Lehman & ETC

Well…this is a talk among us friend…

Looking at the current U.S. situation, the [tag]Chinese[/tag] [tag]Government[/tag] should flex its financial muscle and starts buying up part of [tag]AIG[/tag], [tag]Lehman[/tag], [tag]Ford[/tag] and etc. It’s a FIRE SALE!!!

Since the Chinese Government is buying the T-Bills, why not instead of T-Bills, let start buy some real assets rather than a piece of paper that the U.S. Government might default.

Assets is better than a piece of paper…anytime of the day.

So…Uncle Hu, what say you? Let do some shopping…We need to let Don Corleone knows that the Chinese is coming into his turf. Don Corleone need to share his pie…

On The Death Of Laissez-Faire

The day of open and free economy died on the month of September 2008.

In the future, the US government should not and will not ask, dictate or demand developing countries to open their industries in the name of open and free economy.

The US government should not complain, cry foul or whine about developing countries saving ailing companies because Don Corleone(US government) is doing same thing over at his turf.

On attending Barcamp Hong Kong 08 – Final Part

I went to 4 talks. First was online marketing – customer aquisition, second was augmented reality – as a game, the third was mobile game – can it be profitable and the last reengineer the hk futures market (the most interesting and the most funniest).

P1010075

Online Marketing – Speaker – Sarah -

The topic was interesting. People like always wanted to know what it the SECRET to acquire customers. The speaker – Sarah (used to work for EuroStar).

The only thing that I learned from this talk was paid search. It will drive traffic to your site and affliate could also bring on some positive results. The rest…I think EuroStar still use PRICE as a competitive advantage. Just like any other budget airlines, price and advanced booking is the key.

P1010077

Augmented Reality – Speaker – Ben Lau

You can check out the Wiki if you don’t know what it’s.

It new stuff to me. That is why Barcamp is so interesting and you can’t get this info anywhere unless you go to a paid seminar.

Can it be a commercially viable products? Well, still a long way. But interesting to know…

P1010081

Mobile Games – Speaker Kin Ko – Lakoo.cn

Now, this guy you wanna to know. If you are a Java Mobile games developer and wants to get into the chinese market. This is the guy that will bring you in.

He has developed 2 Java API that can port into any telcos in China. You can ride on his portal and API’s without the headache of talking to each telcos. Also, all the payment gateway from SMS, prepaid card, alipay and others are in place. Off course, riding on his platform, you need to share profit. No free lunch…ok…

Reverse Engineer Hong Kong Futures Market – Speaker – Wang Hang

P1010083

This is by-far the most interesting and funniest speaker. I want to say…he is a brillant guy, too.

The way he presented is like he has found the secret of unlocking the Hong Kong Stock Index behavior and he found a way to make money out of this. He was like damned excited and wanted to share this ’secret’.

Well…people…there is no secret. He just found another way of doing it…that all. All he did was trying to retrieve the Tick Data from the net and testing it with indicators like Linear Regression. He has Data feed but his data feed is via some local stockbroker that stream to a JAVA chart.

Wang, if you are reading this (like if my blog hv tonnes of people coming to read..hehhe), you don’t hv to use this method to do it. You can setup an account with Interactive Brokers. IB provide data feed and historical data. Plus they will give u the API to port into their data server. Then download a software called Tradestation 2K (it’s a discontinued version but you can find it through BT). I like Tradestation 2K because you can program it anyway you want and backtest it. From here, you can test all kind of time frame using different indicators. Linear Regression is good but it’s not the ultimate. There must be some filtering technique to prevent fake price spike.

What Wang showed was a good direction but it’s a long way from profitability. He shoud test the data with higher time frame and different indicators. He might sees a different picture. The goal is to trade less but with maximum kill (profit).

Aiya…I wrote too much. Well, Barcamp was awesome. I want to thank all the sponsors and organizers for making this happen. Every year, the experience was different. Last year, I predict the same kind of crowd would be around for this Barcamp but I was wrong. There were a lot new faces and new technologies talk. Let hope next year is far more different.

Me and Daisy of Digital Anthology. Daisy…thks for taking a pix with a small fry like me…Appreciate it.

P1010084

Me and Sidekick. Another power blogger. Thks sidekick. I re-size to 460 pixels. Hope it’s ok.

P1010073

Ed from Dookaz.com and Angus from 852signal.com. Miss one guy…Victor from Hongkongphooey.com. He was busy with his new job. Did not show up.

P1010047

Last year I took a pix with Yahoo backdrop. So, this year have to do one with Time Warner backdrop.

P1010049

Ed…the man who sponsored T-shirts for this year Barcamp and last year, too.

P1010052

Charles Mok dropped by during the day. I am a little saddened because he did not win the I.T. seat on Sept 7 election. To me, Charles is more of a grassroot guy and Samson is more of autocratic guy. Off course, I like a grassroot guy. I will never be able to see or talk to an autocratic guy because he so high up in his God table.

On The Fannie Mae & Freddic Mac Bailout

Freddie_Mac Fannie_mae_logo

During the 1997 asian financial crisis, the language from the WEST (Don Corleone(U.S.) and the rest of Europe) were…let the inefficient and non-transparent company to close down. No practice of cronyism…

Now, forward to 2008, the WEST applauded the bailout of Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac, which to my point of view was not efficiently run. We should let it go down…just like during the 1997.

Why the double standard???

How can we trust what Don Corleone(the U.S.) said in the future? Didn’t Don Corleone said his word is as good as gold? Heehehhee….

I am thinking aloud….
