On Barcamp HK 2010

Barcamp Hong Kong 2010. Huge turnout this year and the very diverse topic. The event was held at PolyU Hong Kong.

Everything was great…except we need to stand under a 32C above temperature to check out all the event schedule. Maybe next year, they could do it indoor but same place.

Lakoo.cn – Kin Ko – The is the best thing coming out of Barcamp HK this year. He is putting USD$100k to emulate Y Combinator. He only want to incubate startup that are mobile games & entertainment related.

So, if you have ideas, already a start-up and mobile related stuff. Talk to him. The VC he line up are Tencent, Sequoia Capital, Matrix Partner and others.

Sino Dynamic – Alex Kong. This year I like his talk. No fancy talk (I mean no Jaguh Kampung BS). Just about how to get thing done and make money. I even learn a thing or two from his talk.

On Startup Saturday Hong Kong 2010

Startup Saturday Hong Kong. Probably one of the big tech event for this summer in Hong Kong. I am really happy the I.T. start-up scene is alive and maybe thriving.

I was there in the afternoon. I have a class in the morning. The topic was funding. I left the Startup Saturday Hong Kong just after 25 minutes. Reason – I am hearing bullshit from the Funding Panel except Kin Ko. They kept on saying the same stuff in different a way. It was quite boring.

He was pretty straight forward about asking for funding. His saying is building the business and the VC will come.

Maybe I am getting old. I want to hear what they did right to attract the funding and couple guys on the panels are investors themselves. I wanna know their success stories. What companies they have invested and WHY?.

WHAT attract them to invest? HOW is the METHODOLOGY for approaching startup. WHEN they felt it was the right time to put the MONEY….WHAT or WHERE is the tipping point???

Need I say more….

They were babbling about…is Biz Plan important and some other non important BS. Maybe I equate funding like trading the market. Many gurus tell and sell you trading technique that they don’t trade themselves. When you ask them to show you to do in real-time, they just tell you a bunch of stories.

Overall…the event was successful. But the funding panel…were really not there…at least for me.

On blogfest asia – day 2

The second day. Nothing to shout about. The attendance was weak by my standard. Less than one hundred attendees.

Seniors blogger. This was a ‘Wow’ moment for me. Some of them are 90 years old and they are power blogger. Their blog average 1,000 page view a day. Put me to shame….

Sharing their blogging journeys and what have change since they started blogging. One common denominator after they started blogging were bringing their families closer together. That was touching…

Handicap blogger – sharing their thought and blogging journey.

Another session on the third floor, I just stop by and took a pix. Did not stay long enough to listen.

Education sectors and parents talk about social network and blogging.

I left around noon. Maybe the afternoon session was more exciting. I don’t know.

Overall, I was disappointed.

First, The attendance – This is supposed to be Asia events but the audience was less than one hundred on both days. Second, overseas blogger – I did not see name tag prominently display. Example, name, blog, countries their are from. Third, speakers – most of the speakers sat on their chair to give their talks. To me, it’s so damn not professional. Public speaking is about standing in front of the audience, have hand motion, walking around and shares your thought. A boss sit and dictate. That was what I felt. The speakers were dictating his/her intent to me. NOT Sharing.

Well, enough of my rambling. Maybe I am the only one that was disappointed. Everyone seems to have a good time. I don’t know.

I went to check out the blogfest asia day 1. Is there a ‘WOW’ excitement? Well… not for me. Maybe for others.

I left after the introduction of the second speaker. The talk is not for me. Most of the speakers are from NGO or social political blogger. Out of my league.

Moreover, the talk lasted for almost an hour on the first talk and the second talk probably will last about that time. Half an hour is ok. Anything more than that is too much for me.

At this moment, my benchmark is Punch Party talk. 7 minutes on the talk. You can score a touch down, have sex, complete a 1 mile run, 3 1/2 round of heavy weight boxing and etc. A lot can be done in 7 minutes.

Blogfest. What the word mean? Is it blogger festival in full? What does festival mean? Do I feel that it’s a blogger festival?

Let see what day 2 brings.

On attending mobileradiohk iPhone Party

I attended the iPhone party organized by mobileradio.hk. Like I said on my previous post, I am not an iPhone user but I like to hang out with iPhone users.

They start off with some stats which they gathered. Need to give Kudos to mobileradio.hk team. Doing survey is not an easy task.

This is about how much will an iPhone user spend on Apps Store.

What type of stuff they usually buy at apps store.

The next talk was about how to set up foreign apps store account. I did not know apps store is countries centric. Now, I know.

This talk about an apps that exchange biz card that mobileradio.hk recommend.

Next, comes the break, before the break, they talk about google latitude but I did not take any pix because there was extensive media coverage on what google latitude is all about.

Everyone clamoring to take the picture of the cake.

This the second anniversary of mobileradio.hk. Happy Birthday… Not an easy task to maintain an internet radio at these trying times.

On Guy Kawasaki @ Web Wednesday

I have not been to Web Wednesday since they moved the venue to Volar. But this was a special day. Guy Kawasaki is stopping-by to hang around.

Guy Kawasaki.

Read one of his book (How to drive your competiton crazy) long long time ago. I just want to be there. I will never get a chance to see him…again…ever.

My take on Mr. Kawasaki. Well, He is Evangelist first, Marketer second, VC third and somewhere between Marketer and VC is a Writer.

Why I said that. When he talk about VC biz, the word he churned out was just depressing. It’s almost like the VC biz was bust.

But when someone ask about his ghost writer on Twitter. His eyes lit up and give a long Evalangical statement on that.

Then somewhere in between he manages to squeeze in alltop.com. That is a good Marketer.

Overall, I enjoyed his talk. I left earlier because I absorbed enough. Too bad…I did not take a picture with him. Hong Kong has been for me. Meeting so many people that I will never ever dream off and thanks Napoleon for getting this together.

One of my favorite tech event for the year. Every year I would hang around and see what new stuff I would learn. This year its no different. I came to learn and take picture.

I like their talk. Leon (www.lifehack.org) and Greg (www.anobii.com) Lesson learned on mentoring start-up.

Kin (www.lakoo.cn) talk about mobile games in China. This round…I understand a little better on the overall mobile game in China because he presented it in Cantonese.

I always thought there is money to be made in mobile games and have always wondered how to break into this market. But I don’t have the programming capability. I can only become a spectator on this one.

Aaron (www.jadetower.com) on what is google wave is all about.

Bill (www.billibala.com) share about being an entrepreneur.

Save this one for last because need to do some rambling. Alex Kong (www.akasas.com). A very successful malaysian entrepreneur who started asiatravelmart.com and afoofa.com came in to do a presentation on his latest venture.

I left after five minutes because I can’t take a Jaguh Kampung doing his self promotion. He said…’Some of you might know or have seen me in CNN, Businessweek…blah…blah. I have been awarded numerous award….blah…blah…My product are use by MAS, AirAsia…blah…blah). Can’t take this Jaguh Kampung bullshit, man….

In malaysia, I would never be able to meet this guy. He network with the ministers, datuks and tan sris. But in Hong Kong, we are in the same network circle…go figure…hehee…I probably be seeing him again this wednesday because Guy Kawasaki is coming into town.

If he has come in by saying…’My name is so and so…I have developed many internet product and have been some what successful.. in some and this is my latest product…I want to share with you and hopefully spread the word about my latest product’…wouldn’t that be nicer…shit…I would not be rambling so much.
